Access data / server log files
When you visit this website, the hosting provider automatically collects information and stores it in so-called server log files. This includes in particular:
- IP address of the requesting device
- date and time of access
- name and URL of the requested page or file
- browser type and operating system used
- the previously visited page (referrer), if any
This processing is based on our legitimate interest in the secure and stable operation of the website (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). Log data is deleted promptly unless it is exceptionally needed longer to investigate or defend against attacks.
Hosting
The website runs on self-managed server infrastructure. The access data mentioned above is processed as part of hosting. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in providing our service securely and efficiently (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR).
Place suggestions
When you suggest a place, we store the details you enter: name, address and city of the suggested place, the date of your visit, and optional details such as an Instagram handle and a comment. We use this data to review the suggestion internally and, once approved, to show it on the map. Only approved place data is displayed publicly. Email addresses and internal notes remain internal and are never published on the map. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in maintaining and reviewing the directory (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR) and your consent given by voluntarily submitting the data (Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR).
Address search (geocoding)
To make entering addresses easier, the name of the place plus the city or postcode can be sent to the geocoding service Nominatim (OpenStreetMap) to retrieve matching address suggestions and map coordinates. The service is operated by the OpenStreetMap Foundation. For technical reasons, your IP address is transmitted to the service. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in a working address search (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). Provider information: osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy.
Visit confirmations (heart)
Confirmations that a place has been visited (“heart”) are stored solely as an anonymous counter without any personal reference. It is not possible to trace them back to individual people.
Cookies
This website uses a single, technically necessary cookie (“wsc_lang”) that stores your language choice (German or English). It contains nothing but this language preference, is deleted after one year at the latest, and is not used for advertising or tracking. Storing it is required to display the site in your preferred language (Section 25 (2) no. 2 of the German TDDDG); the legal basis for the processing is our legitimate interest in an appropriate language selection (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). Beyond that, the website sets no cookies and embeds no advertising networks. For audience measurement we use a cookie-free solution described in the next section.
Language selection based on IP address
On your first visit we derive the country from your IP address to decide whether to show you the German or the English version of the site. This lookup happens entirely locally on our server using an embedded country database. Your IP address is neither transmitted to third parties nor stored for this purpose; only the resulting language choice is saved in the cookie described above. You can change the language at any time using the switcher in the page header. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in presenting the website in a language you understand (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR).
Audience measurement with Plausible Analytics
To understand how this website is used, we run Plausible Analytics. We operate the software as a self-hosted instance (Plausible Community Edition) on our own server infrastructure located in Germany. The measurement data never leaves this server: it is not shared with third parties and not transferred to countries outside the EU. The measurement script itself is loaded from our subdomain analytics.futurenaut.co, which runs on the same infrastructure.
Plausible works without cookies. No cookies are set and no information is stored on or read from your device; consent under Section 25 (1) of the German TDDDG is therefore not required. No profile is created about you, and you are not recognised across devices or across other websites.
When a page is viewed, the following data is processed:
- the visited page (URL) of this website
- the previously visited page (referrer), if any
- browser, operating system and device type
- country, region and city, derived from your IP address
- date and time of the visit
Your IP address is only processed briefly in memory to determine your approximate location and to count returning visits. For this, a checksum is created from the IP address, the browser identifier and a random value that changes daily; the IP address itself is not stored. Because the random value changes every day, it is technically impossible to link visits beyond a single day. The result is aggregated statistics only, with no reference to any individual person.
The legal basis is our legitimate interest in privacy-friendly analysis of website usage in order to improve our service (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). You can object to this processing under Art. 21 GDPR; an informal message to hallo@wirsindcool.com is sufficient. You can also prevent the measurement altogether by blocking the script with a content blocker. Background information on the software's data processing is available at plausible.io/data-policy.
External links
This website links to external services (for example websites of suggested places or social networks). When you click such links, the privacy policies of the respective providers apply. The mere presence of a link does not transfer any personal data to these providers.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the following rights:
- access to the data stored about you (Art. 15 GDPR)
- rectification of inaccurate data (Art. 16 GDPR)
- erasure (Art. 17 GDPR)
- restriction of processing (Art. 18 GDPR)
- data portability (Art. 20 GDPR)
- objection to processing based on legitimate interest (Art. 21 GDPR)
To exercise your rights, an informal message to hallo@wirsindcool.com is sufficient. You can withdraw any consent you have given at any time with effect for the future.
Right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority
Independently of the above, you have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. The authority responsible for us is the State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information of Baden-Württemberg. You may also contact the supervisory authority of your habitual place of residence.
Changes to this privacy policy
We update this privacy policy whenever the legal framework or the website's features change. The current version published on this page always applies.
